Happy New Year

The New Year has arrived. January is about looking forward but also looking back to what has been achieved.

New Year messages should be positive, filled with hope. But I am not going to lie. I am happy this year has passed. It was the year of indecisiveness, and inaction. A year of paranoia that passed under threat of a devastating war. A year with a truly ugly ending as Bhutto’s death dashed away hopes of millions for the region.

So, let’s look forward, to the New Year. 2008 is the year of election and its inevitable changes. It may even produce the first female president in US history. It also could be a year when green concerns finally touch mainstream sensibility.
So, let’s hope the New Year also brings peace, prosperity, love and hope across the globe.

Benazir Bhutto

Is death so morbid a subject to be included in a New Year message? Would my readers recoil? I struggled with these questions. But I made a decision that my readers would want to connect to this story. They want to recall moments in the life of this courageous woman who chose to be the champion of democracy in such a volatile region. They want to remember those hopeful eyes and determined face. She chose to wear a white veil on her last day. Perhaps, it is meant to become a white flag, a symbol of peace and women's equality in the region.
