How to drag people to a war
"Of course the people don't want war... That is understood. But... it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.

That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

- Hermann Goering at the Nuremberg trials, 1946

from "Nuremberg Diary," by G. M. Gilbert.

William Shakespeare and Axis of Evil
Selected by: Shahri Estakhry
The real Axis of Evil are: Ignorance, Prejudice and Greed. Sh.

I am sure that you will enjoy reading these very meaningful lines, by
William Shakespeare, which are amazingly relevant in the world we live in
at the moment...!

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war
in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervour,
for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword.
It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind...

And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and
the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed,
the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry.
Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded with patriotism, will
offer up all of their rights unto the leader, and gladly so.

How do I know?

For this is what I have done.

And I am Caesar."

William Shakespeare

Try to imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:

*29 have been accused of spousal abuse

*7 have been arrested for fraud

*19 have been accused of writing bad checks

*117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses

*3 have done time for assault

*71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

*14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

*8 have been arrested for shoplifting

*21 are currently defendants in lawsuits

*84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year.

Can you guess which organization this is?

Give up yet?

It's the 535 members of the United States Congress -the same group that crank out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.

Caution please always check for your own safety....better safe than sorry!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus
simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Card for You".
As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk. So don't open any mails with subject: "A Virtual Card for You."
As soon as you get the mail, delete it!! Even if you know the sender!!!

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You",
Do not open it!! Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic ink libraries (.DLL files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able
to boot up!!

Afghan Women
Barbara Walters did a story on gender roles in Kabul several years before the Afghan conflict.

She noted that women customarily walked about 10 feet behind their husbands.

She returned to Kabul recently and observed that men now walked several yards behind their wives.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and said, "This is marvelous. Can you tell the free world just what enabled women to achieve this
reversal of roles?"

"Land mines," said the woman.

Shahrbanoo” is an unlikely story. The encounter of an American woman with a super-conservative Iranian family living in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Tehran was surely not an accident waiting to happen. The centerpiece of the story is Melissa who was visiting her new husband’s family in Tehran last autumn.

Far from Home - Sohrab Shahid Saless,

Iran's film directors win the hearts of audiences at Cannes festival
Iran's directors fighting tighter measures on showing films abroad
Sat May 24, 3:59 AM ET Add Mideast - AFP to My Yahoo!

TEHRAN (AFP) - As Iran's film directors win the hearts of audiences at this year's Cannes festival (news - web sites), their ongoing battle for freedom of expression has taken a new twist with local authorities pressing them to obtain permission to screen films abroad.

Jafar Panahi, whose endearing film the White Balloon carried away the Camera d'Or at Cannes in 1995, received a letter from the culture ministry requiring him to cut several scenes from his new film "Talay-e Sorkh" (Blood and Gold) to allow it to be screened in Cannes.

"I am not going to cut even one frame from my film. My film is now in Cannes and it will be screened," Panahi told AFP in an interview, ahead of Saturday's screening.

But he was not sure how authorities would react to his defiance.

"This is a new wave of pressures on film-makers ... We are feeling more pressure and there seems to be more restrictions," Panahi said.

"Censors have really tied the hands of film-makers," he complained, "but still everyone tries to find a way to express themselves."

In Iran's uncertain political climate, the freer hand and more relaxed censorship measures that directors have enjoyed since moderate President Mohammad Khatami (news - web sites) came to power in 1997 may not last much longer.

Khatami's election was key in securing more space for directors to deal with political and social issues of relevance to Iranian audiences, and enabled them to push the limits of the strict Islamic rules their films must conform to.

But recent setbacks for the reformist camp, notably failed bids by Khatami to increase his presidential powers and reduce those of key conservative institutions, have also taken their toll on Iran's film industry.

The newly-appointed deputy minister of culture charged with cinema affairs, Mohammad Mehdi Heydarian, was formerly a top man in conservative-controlled state television.

In early May he called on directors to "take seriously" the requirement to secure authorization to show films abroad.

Despite the applause they receive in Western art-cinema houses, Iran's directors are frustrated that their movies are not widely available to Iranian audiences.

"I have always tried to screen my films in my own country first because my films deal with social issues and people's problems, and there is no place better than showing the film here to influence the people," Panahi said.

"Most of my films were about the situation of (Iranian) women, this is the first time I have made something about men," said Panahi, commenting about "Blood and Gold", the story of a pizza deliverer caught up in social injustice resulting from the gap between rich and poor.

Panahi's film "The Circle", released in 2000 and focusing on the plight of Tehran's women, sexism and institutional discrimination, was banned in Iran.

For his part, fellow director Bahman Gobadi, director of "A Time for Drunken Horses" (2000) about Iran's Kurds, said he also wanted his films to be more widely available at home.

"I can only get permission to show my film in one cinema ... whereas in the United States 50 cinemas are showing it," he said.

Both directors highlighted the important role of festivals in sending their messages out to the world. "The films are first introduced by the festivals and then find their way into European markets," Panahi said.

Panahi requested permission two months ago to show his latest offering in Iran -- but he has yet to receive a reply.

MOVIE REVIEW
Working-class heroes in Tehran
'Under the Skin of the City' is a censure of Iranian society, but
it's
also
great storytelling.

By Kevin Thomas, Times Staff Writer

"Under the Skin of the City" is an apt title for a film that zeroes in
on
an
urban working-class family and reveals both its daily struggle for survival
and its dreams of a better life. The predicament is universal, but that the
family happens to live in Tehran reveals challenges and hardships that are
inescapably critical of Iranian society, especially concerning the plight
of
women.

But this splendid film is no mere polemic, for Rakhshan Bani-Etemad,
often called the first lady of Iranian cinema, is above all an
accomplished storyteller and dramatist who understands the evocative
power of sound and image. It's no wonder that Iran's film critics voted
her film the best of 2001; it also won the grand jury prize that year
at the Moscow International Film Festival. And Bani-Etemad struck a
chord with Iranian audiences, who made her film a box-office hit.

In an inspired touch, Bani-Etemad, best known for "Narges" (1992) and
"The Blue-Veiled" (1994), both daring in their defense of women, sets
her story against the parliamentary elections of 1998, which carried
hope of reform. A TV newscaster singles out Tuba Rahmat-Abdi (Golab
Adineh), a worn, middle-aged factory worker, to ask her about the
elections but cuts her off as soon as she says shyly that she hopes
elected officials will believe in God and be concerned with the issues
of housing and welfare. At the end of the film, when TV newscasters
catch up with Tuba again, she has become blunt
and outspoken.

Tuba is developing a job-related lung disease but soldiers on. Her
decidedly
older husband, Mahmoud (Mohsen Ghazi Moradi), is lame and stays at home and
is out of touch with the times. The other mainstay of the family is her
eldest son, Abbas (Mohammad Reza Foroutan), an ambitious, hard-working
gofer
for a garment manufacturer. Abbas is the family dreamer: He wants his
younger brother, Ali (Ebraheem Sheibani), a high school student and casual
dissident, and middle-school-age sister, Mahboubeh (Baran Kowsari), to have
the college education he could not afford. His immediate goal is to gather
enough money to obtain a foreign work visa and head for Japan to make more
money than he could have ever hoped to make at home. Abbas also longs to be
able to court a beautiful clerk in his boss' high-rise office.

There is nothing wrong with Abbas' dreams, and Bani-Etemad is
implicitly critical of a government that makes it not only so difficult
to pursue them but also downright dangerous. She is also critical of a
society in which Tuba's miserable eldest child, Hamideh (Homeira
Riazi), now pregnant with her second child, regularly returns to her
family for refuge after her debt-ridden husband brutally takes out his
frustrations on her.

Hamideh's plight is echoed by that of her younger sister's best friend,
who is subject to terrible abuse from her older brother.

What keeps these developments and more from being hopelessly grim are
the loving ties that surmount petty differences and sustain the family
through adversity. Yet there is a limit to just how much love can do,
and the increasingly suspenseful "Under the Skin of the City" takes its
leave at just the right moment, causing us to wonder if, with the
Rahmat-Abdi family, that limit has been reached.

'Under the Skin of the City'

Michael Moore plans Bush-bin Laden film
Published 3/28/2003 4:00 PM
Source

LOS ANGELES, March 28 (UPI) -- Filmmaker Michael Moore's next project might be more controversial than his Oscar-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine."

According to a report in Friday's Daily Variety, Moore is working on a documentary about the "the murky relationship" between former President George Bush and the family of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. The paper said the movie, "Fahrenheit 911," will suggest that the bin Laden family profited greatly from the association.

Moore's anti-war, anti-Bush Oscar acceptance speech provoked a mixture of cheers and boos at the Academy Awards last Sunday.

In addition to the Best Documentary Oscar, "Bowling for Columbine" also had an extraordinarily robust bottom line. Made for about $3 million, it has grossed nearly $40 million worldwide -- making it one of the most commercially successful documentaries of all time.

Variety reported that Moore is working out a deal with Mel Gibson's production company, Icon Productions, to finance "Fahrenheit 911."

According to Moore, the former president had a business relationship with Osama bin Laden's father, Mohammed bin Laden, a Saudi construction magnate who left $300 million to Osama bin Laden. It has been widely reported that bin Laden used the inheritance to finance global terrorism.

Moore said the bin Laden family was heavily invested in the Carlyle Group, a private global investment firm that the filmmaker said frequently buys failing defense companies and then sells them at a profit. Former President Bush has reportedly served as a senior adviser with the firm.

"The senior Bush kept his ties with the bin Laden family up until two months after Sept. 11," said Moore.

Moore told Variety the primary focus of the new project will be to examine what has happened to the United States since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. He accused the Bush administration of using a tragic event to push its agenda.

"It (the new project) certainly does deal with the Bush and bin Laden ties," said Moore. "It asks a number of questions that I don't have the answers to yet, but which I intend to find out."

Moore said he expects the new movie to be in U.S. theaters in time for the 2004 presidential election.

While some critics accused Moore of being anti-American for his Oscar speech, Moore told Variety business has been very good for his movie and his best-selling book "Stupid White Men: And Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation."

"I expressed exactly what was in the film and instead of being blacklisted, I've not only gotten a deal to fund 'Fahrenheit 911' but offers on the film after," he said. "Presales on ('Bowling for Columbine's') video release ran ahead of 'Chicago' this week, and my book is returning to the top spot on the New York Times best-seller list."

Moore said the success of his documentary and book reflects majority public support for his political argument.

"It's because the majority of Americans agree with me, see the economy in the toilet and didn't vote for George W," he said. "People are now realizing you can question your government while still caring about the soldiers."

Documentary movie- Jacques Derrida
What if you could watch Socrates, on film, rehearsing his Socratic dialogues? What if there was footage of Descartes, Thoreau, or Shakespeare as themselves at work and in their daily life? Might we now look at these figures differently, with perhaps a deeper understanding of their work and lives?

Filmmakers Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering Kofman asked themselves these questions, and decided to team up and document one of the most visionary and influential thinkers of the 20th century, a man who single-handedly altered the way many of us look at history, language, art, and, ultimately, ourselves: the brilliant and iconoclastic French philosopher Jacques Derrida.

1000 Women Like Me
Is the title of the movie in Music Hall, LA since July 12th.

Pictures an old struggle between a Father not loved by the Mother who can have the custody of the child according to the law.

A father no matter how caring, responsible , etc. he can be by law can have the custody of a child at the time of divorce as long as he can support the child financially . Even the fact that he might have a second wife will not suspend this right.

This film depicts how cruel this law can be, how brutal and egoist husband can be and a big general message: Individual can not go against a system, how powerful and ambitious he is. The system will rull over the individual. So, any change to be efficient must be in the fundamentals of a system.

Wort watching and sighing .....
