Call on to oppose the war, invasion and occupation of Iraq

Saturday, October 25 in Washington, D.C.
United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) and Act Now to Stop War & End Racism (ANSWER) are joining forces to call on all those who oppose the war, invasion and occupation of Iraq, to unite on Saturday, October 25 in Washington, D.C., for a truly massive outpouring reflecting the growing popular opposition to the Bush Administration’s foreign and domestic program.

It was the peace and antiwar movement in the 1960’s and 70’s that proved to be one of the decisive factors ending the US war in Vietnam. The October 25th demonstration will be a powerful repudiation by the people of the United States of Bush’s criminal war and occupation of Iraq and will be a signal of the new antiwar movement’s potent political force countering the Bush Administration.

UFPJ and ANSWER have both organized antiwar demonstrations numbering in the hundreds of thousands in the last year and have now agreed to join forces for the purpose of organizing the October 25 National March on Washington, D.C. under the banner: End the Occupation of Iraq, Bring the Troops Home Now!

International Students' Day 2003

Dear members of this community!

Some time ago I asked you to send me your suggestions for Iranian films to be shown on the occasion of the International Students' Day 2003 at the University of Bern. Thanks to emperessk for her suggestions! And I also managed to find the "Film" section on this site ;-))

Let me just add a few lines on our project:
when the organising committee of the International Students' Day 2003 decided on Iranian student life as its focal topic, none of us had a clear idea what we were trying to do. In fact, none of us had any idea of where to start and what to expect - news about Iran are few in Swiss papers, and over the course of our investigations it turned out that even the foreign office of the swiss government had no person appointed especially to issues relating to Iran! Over the past eight or nine months we have tried to gather information from here and there, slowly developing our own network and it has been tremendously difficult!

We will be showing films, we're still looking for a poet or poetess to read from his/her work, we're trying to get former Iranian students to talk about their experences, etc.

There's still some time left - ISD is on November 17. We're all very positive and motivated and we're sure we'll have a very interesting day! Even the directors of the university have announced their unconditional support and so we're all working towards a memorable day!

If you are interested in learning more about our group of students or about the outcome of our endeavour, please do not hesitate to contact us at: amnesty@student.unibe.ch

Let's keep moving!

Poetry
There are many wonderful poets and writers who have posted writings under the progressive woman section in Literary Saloon and poetry sections. Rumi is a famous and wonderful Iranian Poet, there is also the writing of Gina Nahai and others. If you cannot find a poet to go, do a poetry lounge with an Iranian theme, make it open mic so people can share readings from their favorite writers and Iranian poets, or read anything interesting they have found on Iran. There is also trying potluck to share if it is not a gigantic crowd so maybe you can take recipes and make a potluck or where every one cooks something and then all share. Maybe you can even look up childrens games played in Iran and use them as Ice breakers or things like that. I was VP of a college organization so I know how difficult organizing and finding things can be, but good luck, also if there is a Middleastern neighboorhood or market you could talk to shopkeepers, I have found people love to a talk about themselves and share when it comes to highlighting and getting a chance to give the positives about their culture to end misunderstandings. Also some writers under Irandokht story section love to help if yhou send an email by looking on the profile.

Disposable Society starts at home

I am sorry to ruin everyone's party but I have something that drives me crazy!!! All those cleaning products that are disposable, one use towlettes for wood, or floors, cabinets, etc! So much waste! I see all my friends and at my college it seems like no one recycled! what happened! I thought people had got more Earth conscious but no! Please, please teach our children the importance of recycling, and using natural products like vineager and water for cleaning. Limon is good for bleaching and so can be ,milk for some stains! Think about all the chemicals we use at hom,e many deadly if mixed together! Our grandparents and ancestors somehow lived well without all these things, can't progress also consist of harnesing the good alternatives from the past not simply from cheap, easy, fast, and disposable technologies?

Movie suggestions
I would try "Ten" by Abbas Kiarostami, about a woman who drives around and ten hitchhikers she talks to giving a wide portarait of modern Iran. Zir-e poost-e shahr or Under the skin of the city is good too, and try the circle by Jafar Panahi. It is banned in Iran for its bleak portrayal of women's oppression in the streets of Tehran. And try Baran by Majid Majidi for a beautiful lovestory that crosses boundares despite the harsh often precarious realities of life.
