International Organization for Medical Physics
Prof. Azam Niroomand-Rad recived Marie Skodowski-Curie Award 2009 from the International Organization For Medical Physics in recognition of a distinguished career contributing to the advancement of International medical physics through research, teaching, and leadership. She is immediate past President of the International Organization For Medical Physics). This award recognises the major contributions she has made to the improvement of health care.
Niroomand-Rad received a Fulbright Scholarship for her undergraduate studies in Physics and mathematics after completing her high school in Tehran, Iran in 1966. She subsequently received full academic scholarship from Cazenovia College, Cazenovia, NY, from State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, NY, and from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Iran to pursue her education in US. She received her PhD in Atomic and Molecular Physics in 1978 from Michigan State University, Michigan, USA. She started her career in medical physics in 1981 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin, USA with a Postdoctoral Fellowship which was funded by the US National Institue of Health.
On a personal note, Niroomand-Rad became interested in physics ever since she was in middle school. In fact, Marie Curie was her role model when she was growing up in Tehran, Iran and she has been in communication with Marie Curie’s grand daughter, Prof. Helen Langevin-Joliot-Curie, who is a well-known physicist. Since retirement from Georgetown University Medical School, she has been living with her husband, Prof. Hossein Hamedani, in Madison, Wisconsin, USA and enjoys the company of her two grandchildren.
