Sep 11, pushed Afghanistan and the plight of its women to the world center stage. But the leading feminist, Mavis Leno has been actively supporting this cause long before that. She became the chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan since 1997. The organization successfully protested the construction of an oil pipeline through Afghanistan, which could potentially have brought in billions of dollars to the Taliban. Mavis was a driving force shedding light on the heinous treatment of women.
Feminist Majority’s recent event; the Global Women’s Rights Awards provided an opportunity to talk to Mavis, her work and how feminist organizations outside the Afghanistan could assist advancement of Afghan women into the 21 century.
